🌿 The Person-Centred Way of Working: Putting You at the Heart of Counselling 🌿

At the heart of counselling is the relationship between client and therapist. In person-centred counselling, that relationship is built on trust, empathy, and genuine understanding, with you leading the way.

At L H Counselling, I work in a fully person-centred way, meaning we believe that you are the expert on your own life. Therapy isn’t about being told what to do or being “fixed”; it’s about being supported to understand yourself more deeply and make changes that feel right for you. Anything that you, as the client, want to speak about during therapy sessions can be spoken about - it is guided by you.

❓What Is Person-Centred Counselling?

Person-centred counselling is a therapeutic approach that focuses on your lived experience, emotions, and inner world. Rather than directing the session or offering advice, the counsellor creates a safe, accepting environment where you can explore whatever feels important to you.

This way of working is grounded in the belief that, given the right conditions, people naturally move towards growth, healing, and self-understanding.

📚The Origins of the Person-Centred Approach

The person-centred approach was developed by Carl Rogers, a psychologist who believed that empathy, acceptance, and authenticity are the key ingredients for emotional change.

Rogers identified three core conditions that support growth in therapy:

Unconditional positive regard – being accepted without judgement

Empathy – feeling deeply understood

Congruence – the therapist being genuine and real

These principles remain central to person-centred counselling today and underpin the work I do at L H Counselling.

➡️ How a Person-Centred Way of Working Can Help

🌿 You Set the Pace

In person-centred counselling, there’s no pressure to talk about anything before you’re ready. Sessions move at your pace, allowing trust and safety to develop naturally.

🌿You Are Fully Heard

Many people come to counselling feeling unheard or misunderstood. Person-centred therapy prioritises deep listening and emotional attunement, helping you feel truly seen and validated.

🌿Increased Self-Understanding

By exploring your thoughts and feelings in a supportive space, you may begin to notice patterns, beliefs, or inner conflicts more clearly, often leading to powerful insights and emotional relief.

🌿 Greater Self-Acceptance and Confidence

Feeling accepted without judgement can be transformative. Over time, this can help you develop greater self-compassion, confidence, and trust in your own decisions.

🌿 Lasting Change from the Inside Out

Rather than focusing on quick fixes, person-centred counselling supports meaningful, long-term change by strengthening your relationship with yourself.

❓Is Person-Centred Counselling Right for You?

Person-centred counselling can be particularly helpful if you are experiencing

🌿 anxiety or low mood

🌿 low self-esteem or self-criticism

🌿 relationship issues

🌿 emotional overwhelm

🌿 feeling stuck or lost

🌿 major life changes or transitions

You don’t need to have it all figured out before starting counselling. Many people begin simply knowing that something doesn’t feel right and that is enough.

🌿 Person-Centred Counselling at L H Counselling

At L H Counselling, I offer a compassionate, client-led space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without pressure or judgement. Our person-centred way of working ensures that therapy is shaped around you, your experiences, and your goals.
