In today’s fast-paced, digitally connected world, it can feel impossible to escape the constant stream of breaking news and global events. While staying informed is important, overexposure to distressing news can take a real toll on your mental health.

At L H Counselling, I support clients who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally drained by what’s happening in the world. If this resonates with you, you’re not alone and there are ways to protect your wellbeing.

Why World Events Can Feel So Overwhelming

When we’re repeatedly exposed to difficult or traumatic stories, whether through social media, TV, or news apps, our nervous system can begin to respond as though we are directly under threat. This can lead to increased anxiety or panic, difficulty sleeping, feeling helpless and out of control, emotional exhaustion or burnout.

For many people, especially those who are naturally empathetic or managing anxiety already, the impact can be hard-hitting.

Practical Ways to Cope with News Anxiety

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by current events, these small, intentional steps can help:

1. Set boundaries with the news

Limit how often you check updates. You don’t need to follow every development in real time to stay informed.

2. Be mindful of your sources

Stick to reliable, balanced news outlets and avoid excessive scrolling on social media, where information can be overwhelming or misleading.

3. Ground yourself in the present moment

Simple grounding techniques like focusing on your breath, noticing your surroundings, or engaging your senses can help calm your mind.

4. Focus on what you can control

When the world feels uncertain, bringing your attention back to your immediate environment and daily routine can restore a sense of stability.

5. Talk about how you’re feeling

Sharing your thoughts with a trusted person can help you process emotions and feel less alone.

When to Seek Extra Support

If the stress of world events is affecting your sleep, mood, or daily functioning, it might be time to seek additional support. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space to explore your feelings without judgement.

At L H Counselling, I work in a person-centred way, meaning you are always at the heart of the process. Together, we can explore what’s coming up for you and find ways to help you feel more grounded and supported.

You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone

It’s natural to feel deeply in response to what’s happening in the world. But you don’t have to hold it all by yourself.

If you’re struggling with anxiety related to the news or world events, you’re welcome to reach out.
