Low self-esteem can quietly shape the way we see ourselves, our relationships, and our place in the world. You might appear confident on the outside while constantly battling self-doubt, harsh self-criticism, or a feeling that you’re “not good enough” underneath it all.

At L H Counselling, I often work with people who have spent years carrying these beliefs alone, and who are exhausted by it. Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to understand where low self-esteem comes from and, more importantly, how to rebuild a healthier relationship with yourself.

What Is Low Self-Esteem?

Low self-esteem is more than just feeling unsure now and then. It can show up as constant self-criticism or negative self-talk, feeling unworthy of love, respect or success. It can also show up as difficulty setting boundaries or saying no, people-pleasing and fear of conflict or comparing yourself to others and feeling “less than”. It could even show up as anxiety, low mood or shame.

These patterns often develop early in life, through childhood experiences, relationships, trauma, bullying, criticism, or feeling unseen or unsupported. Over time, they can become so familiar that they feel like “just who I am.”Counselling helps you gently challenge that belief.

➡️ How Counselling Helps with Low Self-Esteem

🌱 A Safe Space to Be Fully Yourself

In counselling, you don’t have to perform, impress, or hold it all together. You’re met with warmth, empathy, and acceptance…often for the first time. This alone can be deeply healing.

Feeling truly heard and understood can help soften the inner critic and reduce feelings of shame.

🌱 Understanding Where Your Self-Beliefs Came From

Low self-esteem doesn’t appear out of nowhere. Together, we explore where these beliefs began and how they’ve been reinforced over time.

Understanding why you feel the way you do can bring relief and self-compassion, replacing “What’s wrong with me?” with “This makes sense.”

🌱 Challenging Negative Self-Talk

Many people with low self-esteem have an internal voice that is harsh, critical, or unforgiving. Counselling helps you notice this voice, question it, and gradually replace it with something kinder and more balanced.

This isn’t about “positive thinking”…it’s about developing a realistic, compassionate view of yourself.

🌱 Building Confidence and Self-Worth

As therapy progresses, clients often notice changes such as: feeling more confident when expressing needs and opinions, setting healthier boundaries without guilt and feeling less dependent on external validation as well as trusting your own decisions and yourself more.

Confidence grows naturally when self-worth is no longer tied to pleasing others or avoiding rejection.

➡️ Improving Relationships

Low self-esteem can impact how we show up in relationships…romantic, family, friendships, and work. Counselling can help you recognise unhelpful patterns, improve communication, and build relationships based on mutual respect rather than fear or self-doubt.

🌱 The Benefits of Counselling for Low Self-Esteem

People who engage in counselling for self-esteem often experience: increased self-confidence and self-acceptance, reduced anxiety and emotional overwhelm, healthier boundaries & stronger relationships, greater emotional resilience and a clearer sense of identity and self-worth as well as feeling more calm, grounded and in control.

Most importantly, many clients describe feeling more like themselves…not a “fixed” version, but a freer one.

🌹 You Don’t Have to Feel This Way Forever

Low self-esteem can feel deeply ingrained, but it can change. With the right support, it’s possible to develop a kinder inner voice, feel more secure in who you are, and stop letting self-doubt run your life.

If any of this resonates with you, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
