When people hear the term self-care, they often picture bubble baths, yoga retreats, or expensive wellness routines. While those things can be lovely, they’re not always realistic, especially when you’re juggling work, family, mental health challenges, chronic stress, or simply trying to get through the day.

At L H Counselling, I believe self-care should be practical, accessible, and compassionate. It should not just be another thing on your to-do list that makes you feel like you’re failing.

Here are some realistic self-care ideas that work in real life, even when energy, time, or motivation is low.

🌿 What Self-Care Really Means

Self-care isn’t about perfection. It’s about supporting your nervous system, meeting your emotional needs, and reducing burnout, even in small ways.

True self-care helps you feel more regulated, not pressured, fits into your existing routine and supports your mental health, not just your productivity.

🌿 Practical Self-Care Ideas You Can Actually Maintain

One of the most powerful forms of self-care is adjusting expectations. So instead of thinking to yourself “what SHOULD I be doing?”, try asking yourself what is MANAGEABLE today.

If things are feeling particularly challenging, your self-care might look like eating something simple, not answering all your messages and letting “good enough” be enough. This is okay and can help to reduce shame and emotional burnout, which contribute to anxiety and low mood.

🌿 Create Micro-Moments of Calm

You don’t need an hour. One to five minutes will do. Take three slow breaths before switching tasks, stand outside to get some fresh air or sit quietly before exiting the car. Small pauses like this can make your nervous system feel a bit safer and can reduce stress over time.

🌿 Set Gentle Boundaries

Healthy boundaries are a form of self-care, even when they feel uncomfortable.

Good examples of this are not replying to messages and emails as soon as you receive them, saying you will get back to people instead of over-explaining or limiting time with people who drain you.

Boundaries are there to protect emotional energy an are important if you are prone to people-pleasing or get burned out easily.

🌿 Support Your Body Without Punishment

Self-care isn’t about forcing routines, it’s about listening to your body. Sometimes this might look like going to bed earlier instead of scrolling, eating regularly even if they are basic meals, and choosing rest instead of “pushing through” exhaustion. Supporting your body can help you to stabilise your moods, focus and emotional resilience.

🌿 Be Kind to Your Inner Voice

Notice how you speak to yourself during difficult moments. If your inner dialogue is harsh, try asking yourself; “Would I say this to someone I care about?”

If you replace criticism with neutral or compassionate language this can significantly improve self-esteem and mental wellbeing.

🌿 Why Does It Feel So Hard?

If self-care feels impossible, there isn’t anything wrong with you. Mental health struggles, trauma, long-term stress, or life changes can reduce motivation, increase overwhelm and make rest feel unsafe or undeserved.

This is where I can help you through counselling. Not by telling you what to do (I do not do this)! But by understanding why things feel difficult and supporting you at your OWN pace.

🌿 How Counselling Can Support Sustainable Self-Care

At L H Counselling, I can help clients understand emotional patterns and burnout/ red flags leading up to burnout.

I can help you develop realistic coping strategies which will work for you.

I can help you to rebuild self-trust and compassion and create self-care routines that fit in with YOUR life.

Therapy isn’t about fixing anything, but about supporting you to make sustainable changes.

🌿 You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from yourself or your life, counselling can help you gently find your way back.

At L H Counselling, I offer a safe, supportive space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace.
